group of cyclists in a raceUSADA announced today that Madalyn Godby of Louisville, Colorado, an athlete in the sport of Cycling, has tested positive for a prohibited substance and will lose competitive results due to the presence of a prohibited substance in her urine sample.

Godby, 20, tested positive for Clenbuterol as the result of an In-Competition urine sample collected on February 6, 2013 at the Pan American Continental Track Championships in Mexico City, Mexico. Clenbuterol is a prohibited Anabolic Agent under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing and the rules of the International Cycling Union (UCI), both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code (the “Code”)and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

Godby’s sample was collected by the UCI, and after notifying the athlete of her test results, the UCI referred the case to USADA to evaluate further. After a thorough review of the case, including the evaluation of information regarding documented cases of meat contamination in Mexico, both USADA and the UCI, could not, to a comfortable satisfaction, conclude that Godby had acted negligently or was at fault for the positive test. While it could not be established that Godby was at fault or acted negligently in this instance, in accordance with the Code and Article 288 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules, a violation of the anti-doping rules in connection with an In-Competition test automatically leads to the disqualification of all results obtained in that competition.

Therefore Godby’s results obtained on February 6, 2013 at the Pan American Continental Track Championships shall be automatically disqualified, and if Godby is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation in the future, it will be treated as a first offense under the rules.

In an effort to aid athletes, as well as all support team members such as parents and coaches, in understanding the rules applicable to them, USADA provides comprehensive instruction on its website on the testing process and prohibited substances, how to obtain permission to use a necessary medication, and the risks and dangers of taking supplements as well as performance-enhancing and recreational drugs. In addition, the agency manages a drug reference hotline, Drug Reference Online (www.GlobalDRO.com), conducts educational sessions with National Governing Bodies and their athletes, and proactively distributes a multitude of educational materials, such as the Prohibited List, easy-reference wallet cards, periodic newsletters, and protocol and policy reference documentation.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement, and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
