USADA Announces Program Highlights, Testing Statistics For First Quarter 2010

In serving its mission to protect the integrity of competition, inspire a commitment to the core principles of true sport, and preserve the rights of U.S. athletes to compete healthy and clean, USADA works proactively through multiple programs, including: athlete and outreach education; out-of-competition, no-advance notice testing; in-competition testing; collaboration with law enforcement agencies; and worldwide cooperation with anti-doping authorities, to support clean athletes in their pursuit of level playing fields. Toward that end, USADA is pleased to share the following statistics and specific highlights for the first quarter of 2010.

FIRST QUARTER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Vancouver Educational Efforts: In the months leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, USADA also launched an aggressive educational campaign to ensure all members of Team USA were aware of their requirements and responsibilities under the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Anti-Doping Rules. In addition to providing in-person presentations, interactive webinars, and regular written correspondence with the U.S. delegation, the centerpiece of the initiative was a dedicated online portal usada.org/vancouver, available through a prominent link on USADA’s website. This served as the educational hub for those seeking anti-doping information specific to the 2010 Games, as well as a link to Global DRO, and information on the 2010 Prohibited List among other resources. In addition, the site featured specific mobile applications for iPhone and BlackBerry users as well as other mobile devices so that athletes and support personnel could stay connected with anti-doping resources away from their computers.

Vancouver Testing Efforts: In preparation for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, USADA ramped up its testing efforts on the U.S. Olympic Team to continue its commitment to protect athletes and do its utmost to detect any instances of doping. USADA conducted an extensive testing plan across all twelve (12) Winter Olympic sports, which ensured that all team members were tested within the 150-day period leading up to the Games.

Outreach and Education: Outreach Education programming for the first quarter reached out to more than 2,300 junior level athletes, student-athletes and students, teachers, athlete support, and parents in six (6) cities across six (6) states, representing four (4) sports and six (6) organizations.

Olympic Education programming for the first quarter reached out to more than 806 individual elite athletes, junior athletes, athlete support, medical staff and NGB staff, in twelve (12) cities across seven (7) states, representing more than twenty-three (23) sports. Together these programs encompassed athletic summits, 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, club events, development camps, training camps, national and international events and conferences, Olympic Training Center Dining Hall Chats, symposia, webinars, and coaches’ conferences

For this quarter, USADA’s Global DRO – which provides easily accessible information on the status of specific pharmaceutical products for use by athletes, received 23,644 search inquiries pertaining to U.S. products. In addition, the Drug Reference department received 338 direct call inquiries to the Drug Reference Line and responded to 115 e-mail inquiries.

Implementation of Testing Program in Professional Boxing: In an unprecedented step, USADA executed an anti-doping program for the sport of professional boxing. In the lead-up to and immediately following the May 1^st match between welterweight fighters Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Shane Mosley, USADA implemented its gold standard testing program, as a result of the athletes’ seeking out World Anti-Doing Code-compliant drug testing. The athletes entered the program in mid-March in advance of the May 1, 2010 fight, committing themselves to the same standards undertaken by Olympic and Paralympic athletes throughout the world. Mayweather and Mosley underwent USADA education, submitted whereabouts information, and participated in blood and urine testing, both in-competition and through no-notice, out-of-competition testing. In all USADA conducted eight tests for each athlete, four each that included both blood and urine, and four each for urine only.

FIRST QUARTER PROGRAM STATISTICS

USADA performed a total of 1,868 doping control tests in the first quarter. Of those tests, 1,432 (77%) were out-of-competition (OOC) tests and 436 (23%) were tests conducted in-competition. USADA conducted in-competition testing at 33 events in the first quarter. OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s home, training facility or other location and is performed with no advance notice to the athlete; however, some OOC tests are coordinated during team training camps.

For the first quarter, USADA announced a total of seven (7) anti-doping rule violations. USADA including three (3) Non-Analytical Positives, one (1) for an anabolic agent, one (1) for a stimulant, one (1) for an anabolic agent and stimulant, and one (1) for marijuana.

USADA announces its testing numbers quarterly. Individual cases of alleged doping violations are announced at the time of the resolution.  For the testing history of individual athletes, visit the USADA website at usada.org.
