U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Announces Final Testing Numbers for 2006

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) administered a total of 8,421 doping control tests in 2006, including 7,856 domestic tests, USADA Chief Executive Officer Terry Madden announced today.  Out-of-Competition (OOC) testing comprised 59 percent (4,666) of USADA’s 2006 domestic tests.  The 3,190 In-Competition (IC) tests accounted for the remaining 41 percent of USADA’s domestic numbers.

“USADA’s doping control program continues to be recognized as a model for other anti-doping organizations worldwide,” Madden said. “In 2006 we again increased our OOC testing, widely considered to be the most effective method of deterrence.  U.S. athletes also demonstrated their strong commitment to drug-free sport, with 95 percent providing whereabouts information for the OOC testing program.”

OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s training facility or other location and is performed with no advance notice to the athlete; however, some OOC tests are coordinated during team training camps.  In 2006, 261 tests were carried out at camps.

Other notable numbers in 2006 include:

• USADA tested athletes in 69 Olympic, Paralympic and Pan American sports

• USADA tested athletes at 207 events and 14 camps

• USADA administered 565 tests on U.S. and non-U.S. athletes in the United States on behalf of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), other National Anti-Doping Agencies (NADOs) and International Federations (IFs)

• USADA announced 17 anti-doping rules violations

In the fourth quarter (October 1 – December 31) of 2006, USADA conducted 1,574 domestic tests, 70 percent of which (1,102) were out-of-competition tests.  USADA administered 147 additional tests on behalf of other organizations for a total of 1,722 doping control tests during the final three months of last year.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.  USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
