TrueSport, powered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, in conjunction with Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics and the College of Health and Human Development, presents the inaugural TrueSport University event, “Becoming a TrueSport Family.”
This free community event for parents, kids, coaches, youth sport leaders, and school administrators will be held in Rec Hall on the Penn State University Park campus on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
The evening will include special guest speakers Penn State Head Football Coach James Franklin, 4-time Olympic Medalist in Swimming Peter Vanderkaay, USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart, and Penn State Assistant Athletic Director Jan Bortner.
Having won two Olympic Gold, and two Olympic Bronze Medals, and serving as the Team Captain for USA Swimming at the London 2012 Games, Peter Vanderkaay will share his unique insight on what it takes to be a TrueSport athlete while competing at the highest level of his sport.
The event will also include a panel discussion with youth sport experts:
- Dan Gould, Director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports;
- Robin Vanderkaay, mother and biggest fan of four-time Olympic medalist, Peter Vanderkaay; and
- Kristen Dieffenbach, Associate Professor of Athletic Coaching Education at West Virginia University.
Panelists will answer audience questions about selecting the right program for your child, maintaining sport-life balance, single-sport specialization, and more.
Immediately following the presentations, varsity Penn State Fencing and Women’s Gymnastics athletes will perform interactive sport demonstrations.
The event will conclude with time for kids and families to visit and take pictures with Peter Vanderkaay as well as obtain autographs from Penn State Fencing, Wrestling, Men’s Soccer, Swimming, and Women’s Gymnastics athletes.
Individual attendees and those groups or teams who attend together will be eligible for giveaways.
Participants can register now at TrueSport.org/TSU. Or, register at the event beginning at 5 p.m. Members of the media are welcome to attend.
