The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is pleased to announce that John Bobo has joined USADA as its Chief Operating and Innovation Officer (COIO). Bobo will oversee USADA’s doping control operations and Olympic and Paralympic testing program, while also leading innovation efforts in technology, software development, and data security.
With decades of experience in a wide range of industries, Bobo brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He most recently served as Vice President for Business Development at Oura Ring, Inc. heading up research and sports partnerships. Prior to that position, Bobo spent 11 years at NASCAR. As Vice President of Racing Operations, he led the sanctioning body’s anti-doping program, the development of an industry-wide credentialing technology platform, and the design of protocols used by NASCAR as the first major sport to return from the 2020 shutdown.
“John has a passion for ensuring fairness in sport and has long been an advocate for innovation that supports the wellbeing of athletes,” said USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart. “Having extensive experience in leading and building teams for success, John will be a tremendous asset in USADA’s future objectives, and we’re thrilled to have him join our team.”
Bobo began his career as an Assistant District Attorney General for the 11th Judicial District in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he prosecuted a variety of cases, from first degree murder to narcotics cases. Additionally, Bobo spent several years in the US Department of Transportation, most notably as Director of the Office of Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy & Compliance.
With his return to the anti-doping field, Bobo will guide USADA’s collaboration with partners to ensure clean sport as the U.S. hosts many international events in the coming years, such as the 2023 FISU World University Games, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Bobo holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis. He joined USADA on November 30, 2022, and is now based in USADA’s headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.
