U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Announces Final Testing Numbers for 2007

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) administered a total of 8,347 doping control tests in 2007, including 7,801 domestic tests, USADA Chief Executive Officer Travis T. Tygart announced today.

Out-of-Competition (OOC) testing, widely considered to be the most effective method of deterrence, comprised 61 percent (4,733) of USADA’s 2007 domestic tests. OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s home, training facility or other location and is performed with no advance notice to the athlete.  In 2007, approximately 447of the OOC tests were carried out at team training camps.

The 3,068 In-Competition (IC) tests accounted for the remaining 39 percent of USADA’s domestic testing numbers.

“The overwhelming majority of America’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes want to prove to the world that they compete clean and they demonstrate this by their relentless support for anywhere, anytime testing,” said Tygart.  “Our clean athletes’ contribution to protecting the integrity of Olympic sport through participation in one of the most stringent testing programs in the world is commendable and we thank them.”

Other notable numbers in 2007 include:

• USADA tested athletes in 69 Olympic, Paralympic and Pan American sports plus athletes from 10 other sport federations

• USADA tested athletes at 209 events and 27 camps

• USADA administered 546 tests on U.S. and non-U.S. athletes in the United States on behalf of the World Anti-

Doping Agency (WADA), other National Anti-Doping Agencies (NADOs) and International Federations (IFs)

• USADA announced 17 anti-doping rules violations

In the fourth quarter (October 1 – December 31) of 2007, USADA conducted 1,063 domestic tests, 63 percent of which (666) were out-of-competition tests.  USADA administered 214 additional tests on behalf of other organizations for a total of 1,277 doping control tests during the final three months of last year.

U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.  USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
