The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is pleased to share the following program highlights and statistics for the second quarter of 2009.
Program Highlights
In the second quarter of 2009, USADA released its Annual Report for 2008, reporting on key accomplishments, annual statistics and financial statements for the eventful Olympic year. A downloadable copy of this can be found at https://www.usada.org/who/report.html or a hard copy may be requested by e-mailing the Communications and Outreach department at media@usada.org.
Also in the second quarter, as part of its outreach education initiatives, USADA released a comprehensive ethics and anti-doping curriculum for use in classrooms, and in health and physical education programs. Titled “That’s Dope” the program offers a Facilitator’s Guide as well as a Student Workbook, and is available for educators and mentors to administer with teenaged and young-adult students and athletes. “That’s Dope” also includes a complementary website featuring interactive and thorough educational resources to engage young people in important ethical, healthy and positive anti-doping themes. Meeting national standards in Physical Education, Health and Language Arts, and Science, and designed to appeal to the target audience, “That’s Dope” equips young people with critical life lessons regarding:
- responsible decision-making,
- alternatives to using performance-enhancing drugs,
- tools for making balanced food choices,
- heredity and body type knowledge, and
- consumerism skills related to dietary/nutritional supplements.
The website can be found at www.thatsdope.org and the curriculum can be downloaded at www.thatsdope.org/classroom. The middle/junior high school companion, “100% Me,” will be released in late August.
Athlete education programming for the second quarter reached out to more than 4,200 individual elite athletes, junior athletes, athlete support, and NGB staff, in twenty-two (22) cities across fifteen (15) states, representing more than twenty (20) sports. These programs encompassed athletic summits, club events, development camps, training camps, national and international events and conferences, Olympic Training Center Dining Hall Chats, symposiums, and coaches’ conferences.
For this quarter, USADA’s Drug Reference Online – which provides easily accessible information on the status of specific U.S. pharmaceutical products for use by athletes – received 14,288 search inquiries, the Drug Reference Line received 556 call inquiries, and an additional 184 direct general inquiries were made.
Program Statistics
USADA performed a total of 2,581 doping control tests in the second quarter of 2009. Of those tests, 2,286 were domestic tests and 295 were tests administered on U.S. and non-U.S. athletes in the United States on behalf of other anti-doping and sports organizations.
Out-of-Competition (OOC) testing accounted for 1,299 (57%) of the total testing number. OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s home, training facility or other location and is performed with no advance notice to the athlete; however, some OOC tests are coordinated during team training camps. In-Competition (IC) tests at 48 competitions accounted for 987 (43%) of the testing numbers for the second quarter in 2009.
In addition, USADA was contracted to provide doping-control services for 126 user-pay tests at 16 sport events throughout the United States.
USADA announced ten (10) anti-doping rules violations in the second quarter of 2009, including one
(1) suspension for an Anabolic Agent, one (1) suspension for refusal to submit to sample collection, six
(6) suspensions for marijuana, one (1) suspension for Strychnine, and one (1) suspension for Clenbuterol.
USADA announces its testing numbers quarterly. Individual cases of alleged doping violations are announced at the time of the resolution. For the testing history of individual athletes, visit the USADA website at usada.org.
USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
