The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) performed a total of 2,738 doping control tests in the second quarter (April 1- June 30) of 2005, including 2,575 domestic tests. The number of Out-of-Competition (OOC) domestic tests (1,288) was almost equal to the number of In-Competition (IC) domestic tests (1,287) completed during that period.
More than 93 percent of the OOC domestic testing was performed with no advance notice to the athlete. Testing completed at camps accounted for the remaining seven percent (85) of the OOC testing. OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s training facility or other location, based on information provided quarterly by approximately 2,500 athletes in the OOC testing pool.
USADA carried out 1,287 IC domestic tests at 79 domestic and international events during the second quarter, including the Boston Marathon, the Nike Prefontaine Classic, the 2005 World Swimming Championship Trials, and the U.S. National Wresting Championships.
On behalf of other anti-doping organizations, USADA conducted 163 tests on U.S. and non-U.S. athletes in the United States. USADA enlisted the assistance of international agencies to perform 11 tests on U.S. athletes living or training abroad.
In the second quarter, USADA announced six anti-doping rules violations, including one suspension involving the use of recombinant human erythropoietin (r-EPO), one suspension for the use of a stimulant, two suspensions for the prohibited use of cannabis, one suspension involving a beta-2 agonist, and another suspension for blood doping
USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement. USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
USADA announces its testing numbers quarterly. Individual cases of alleged doping violations are announced at the time of the resolution. For the testing history of individual athletes, visit the official USADA Web site at www.uantidoping.org
