The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) performed a total of 2,956 drug tests during the second quarter of 2004, the largest number in any quarter of its history.
“With the support of the U.S. Olympic Committee, USADA has done everything within its authority to assist in sending a clean team to the Olympics,” said USADA Chief Executive Officer Terry Madden.
USADA completed 2,956 in 66 sports between Apr. 1 and June 30, 2004 under its domestic testing program. Approximately 49 percent or 1,443 of these tests were no-advance-notice out-of-competition tests (OOC). The no-advance-notice OOC tests are conducted at an athlete’s home, training venue or other location without any prior notice.
Also, under its domestic program, USADA completed 242 advance-notice OOC tests and 1,271 in-competition tests at 77 events during this period.
On top of the 2,956 tests, USADA also performed 58 tests for the World Anti-Doping Agency, other national anti-doping agencies and international federations.
During the first six months of 2004, USADA has completed 4,946 tests.
USADA received 12 adverse laboratory reports during the second quarter. The detection of a prohibited substance by the laboratory may or may not ultimately result in a doping sanction.
Out of the adverse laboratory reports, three were for prohibited anabolic agents; five for stimulants; two for Beta-2 agonists; one for erythropoietin (EPO); one for cannabinoids. Three of the 12 cases involved non-U.S. athletes and were referred to the athlete’s international federation for handling. There were no refusal to tests during the second quarter.
There were seven additional initial laboratory reports for athletes, which had prior medical waivers on file for the use of the restricted substance. These results are statistically reported as negative.
USADA is the independent anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States, and is responsible for managing the testing and adjudication process for the Olympic movement in the United States. USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
USADA announces its testing numbers four times annually. The statistics for doping violations including positive tests are announced at the time of the resolution and are on USADA’s website. For individual athlete testing history, visit the USADA web site at www.usantidoping.org.
